WHO declares Ebola outbreak in DR Congo, Uganda global health emergency; Nigeria Tightens It's Surveillance as Ebola Kills 80 People in Congo

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared the Ebola outbreak affecting the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda a global health emergency after suspected infections and deaths continued to rise in eastern Congo and confirmed cases emerged beyond the initial outbreak zone.

In a statement issued yesterday, the WHO said Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus determined that the outbreak met the criteria for a “public health emergency of international concern” after consulting with authorities in both countries.

However, the situation is not currently classified as a pandemic emergency, it added.

No fewer than 80 persons have died from a fresh outbreak of Ebola virus in at least three health zones, including Bunia, Rwampara and Mongbwalu of the Democratic Republic of Congo, according to data from the World Health Organisation on Sunday.

This is as the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, in a statement by its Director General, Jide Idris, on Sunday, said it has increased its surveillance of the disease.

The 17th outbreak in Congo, where Ebola was first identified in 1976, could in fact be much larger, given the high positivity rate of the initial samples and increasing number of suspected cases being reported, the WHO said.
